Bring devices under management

A gateway finds more devices than Witina manages. A device is under management once it’s activated: the gateway polls it, Witina watches it for problems, and it counts toward your plan.

If the customers dashboard says “12 devices found, none under management”, the gateway has found devices but none of them has been activated yet.

  • From the network. The gateway listens for LLDP announcements and adds the devices it hears about to My Network as discovered devices.
  • From a UniFi console. An adopted UniFi site adds its devices; see Connect UniFi Site Manager.
  • By hand. See Add a device by hand.

Computers, phones, printers, and other endpoints the gateway sees are listed separately, on the Computers & phones, Printers, and IoT & other tabs of My Network. They’re never activated and don’t count toward your plan.

Devices in an adopted UniFi site get their connections from the site’s own settings: SSH with the site’s device credentials, and SNMP once it’s on for the site. The first time the customer’s gateway reaches one of these devices directly, Witina activates it. You don’t need to do anything.

UniFi devices that run neither SSH nor SNMP, such as the USW Flex Mini or the UPS Tower, are read only through the console. They’re never activated and don’t count toward your plan.

  1. In My Network, on the Network equipment tab, open the device and choose Activate.
  2. Check its Name, IP address or hostname, Region, and Division.
  3. Choose the credentials Witina should use: SNMP credential, SSH credential, and HTTP credential (tick Use HTTPS for port 443). To add one, choose + New credential….
  4. Choose Quick activate or Guided setup.

Witina first identifies the device, by logging in or asking it over SNMP or HTTP. It then sets up what that kind of device supports, such as SNMP polling or NETCONF.

  • Quick activate makes every change for you, including turning services on on the device.
  • Guided setup asks before each one, such as “Enable SNMP?”. Choose Not now to skip it.

You can watch each step as it runs. At the end, Activation complete lists each service and what happened to it. If something needs attention, choose Retry after fixing it.

A device counts toward your plan as soon as you activate it, even if setting it up doesn’t finish.

  • “Could not identify this device”: none of the credentials worked, or Witina couldn’t tell what the device is. Check the credentials and try again.
  • “Identified this device as …, but no vendor profile matches it”: Witina knows the vendor, but doesn’t support this model yet.

In My Network, on the Network equipment tab, choose Add equipment. The form is the same as for activating a device. Name and Region are required, and the device is activated when you choose Quick activate or Guided setup.

On the device’s page, choose Pause polling: For 1 hour, For 8 hours, or Until I resume. Witina stops collecting from the device until you choose Resume polling.

A paused device still counts toward your plan. Pausing doesn’t silence its alerts; to do that, use Silence alerts; see Alerts and incidents.

In My Network, open the device’s menu on the Network equipment tab and choose Delete. This can’t be undone.
